Adult Classes at Pewabic
Pewabic offers classes for adults in all skill and confidence levels. The facilities at historic Pewabic Pottery are exceptional and serve to enhance the educational program by providing high quality and diverse options for creating and firing ceramics.
There are many advantages to studying ceramics at Pewabic which include:

2013 Visiting Artist Series
China Painting on the Glazed Surface | $75.00

Joan Symkowski | Independent Artist and Pewabic Pottery Student
Joan has spent the last two years traveling and attending workshops where she learned the traditional China Painting techniques that Pewabic’s founder, Mary Stratton started her ceramic career doing. Joan will share with students her learned skills to enhance glazed ceramic surfaces using china painting. All basic material will be supplied. Each attendee should bring at least one finished glaze piece on which to practice techniques.
From the Ground Up: Ceramics and the Urban Landscape | $ 125.00

Pulling from Pewabic’s surroundings, students will create sculptural ceramic objects that express elements of urban life. Studies will be rooted in influence from architecture, fabricated street objects and nature to inspire form, perspective and scale. Slab construction will be the main building technique with an emphasis on surface pattern, color and texture. Students will create a small series of dynamic objects that reflect skills demonstrated. Through group discussion and observation we will address what city terrain represents, and how the space we occupy influences our daily lives.

This workshop will introduce students to alternative tools in the ceramics studio. The students and instructor will work together to build their own tools for throwing and hand building. Students will also learn to look to for clever uses of household appliances, and look at ceramics from a DIY perspective in order to simplify the process of creating in clay.
Clay Slabs, The Narrative Surface and Image Transfers | $150.00

Assistant Professor, Sculpture & Functional Art | Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State
This workshop provides instruction and information on screen-printing with slips and under-glazes onto clay slabs used to construct functional objects. Students will gain hands on experience printing onto leather hard clay slabs and demonstration on how to produce a screen in a DIY setting.
