A late spring snowfall didn’t stop more than 330 people from attending Pewabic’s annual birthday party on March 16. Adults and children enjoyed tours, demos, shopping, actually getting their hands on some clay and, of course, birthday cake. Many people I spoke with had never been to Pewabic before and were blown away by all we do and make. As the executive director, it is always thrilling to see people here, experiencing firsthand the power of handcrafted ceramic art to transform lives. We had people thinking about redoing their kitchens with Pewabic tile, folks buying gifts in the Gallery Store, and more than one parent who told me that putting their hands over their child’s as they threw their very first pot was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This blog is meant to provide a forum for those engaging with Pewabic in any number of ways during this, our 110th consecutive year of operating a working pottery and artists’ community from the same location on the east side of Detroit. Future blog posts will be about special 110th anniversary events, such as the “Pewabic Is…” activity. Visitors to the birthday party were asked to fill in that blank, and we got a wide variety of wonderful responses.
