Pewabic: Past/Present celebrates Mary Chase Perry Stratton and her tremendous impact upon the world of ceramics Stratton’s innovations and teachings live on through Pewabic, an institution that has fostered generations of ceramic artists and educators who continue her mission today.
Pewabic is a ceramic studio located in Detroit, Mary Chase Perry Stratton founded the business in 1903 with Horace Caulkins, developer of the Revelation Kiln. From the beginning, Pewabic reflected the values of the Arts and Crafts movement, which rejected machine-made products in favor of hand-made craftsmanship. Stratton is known for her scientific experimentation with glazing and firing techniques.
