Empty Bowls

A number of years ago two artists, Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom had a simple idea – to involve potters in a grass-roots movement to alleviate hunger that had spread too many communities. One form of this movement, a simple meal of bread, soup and water, donated by area restaurants, will be held on Saturday, February 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Pewabic Pottery. All proceeds will go to Gleaner’s Community Food Bank in Detroit, which serves area agencies feeding the hungry.
For donation of $5.00 to $25.00, participants may choose a bowl donated by local artists, students, children’s workshop participants or the Pewabic staff, with which they may enjoy a meal of soup and bread. Guests may then keep their bowl as a reminder of the prevalence of hunger in our community and our power to overcome that hunger. Restaurants participating are: Beverly Hills Grill, Lunchtime Global, Pronto, Zoup! and Sindbads. Limit of two bowl purchases per customer and no pre-sale of bowls prior to 11:00 a.m. opening.
