Phelps | Digger, 2016

Kelly & Kyle Phelps have been co-creating for almost two decades. They have explored many facets of their shared past and convey reverence for working class Americans in each of their pieces.

Kyle Phelps on creating with his brother: "There is no singular authorship. It’s not a Kelly piece, it’s not a Kyle piece, it’s our work. It does come with a lot of compromise. If you’ve not collaborated with someone before, you should really try it out."

The Phelps brothers are both professors in ceramics arts, and encourage their students to explore the possibilities that open up through collaborative efforts.

"Factory workers are craftsmen, they’re artisans. They are craft people by nature. Our father was a metal manufacturer and a mold maker. Art was always there by nature, but not necessarily by name."  – Kelly Phelps
