Every year, Pewabic staff venture out to attend NCECA’s annual conference, and this year is no different. NCECA is the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, a 501(c)3 organization that engages and sustains a community for ceramic art, teaching and learning. This year, marks the 49th annual conference. It will begin this week in Providence, Rhode Island, and Pewabic will be well represented by staff including our Fabrication Supervisor Alex Thullen.

At Pewabic, Alex oversees glazing and kilns. In his studio practice, Alex is a potter. He throws vessels and pots, and his glazes often have an earthy or metallic surface. However, this year at NCECA, Alex will be showcasing a tile with a design inspired by both Celtic and Islamic imagery.

As part of the conference’s programming, Alex will debut the tile in Aút Këm, an exhibition organized by Cellar Door Projects to present a select group of North American contemporary ceramic artists. We are thrilled for Alex as NCECA has a great reputation in ceramic communities around the world. We are extremely proud of Alex’s personal accomplishments as a ceramist as well as the expertise he brings to Pewabic. Since we all are not able to attend the conference, enjoy more of Alex’s work on his website.
