Experience over a century of tradition
Pewabic is a National Historic Landmark pottery located in Detroit’s Jefferson Corridor. Since 1903, Pewabic artisans have handcrafted ceramic art beginning with raw, earthen materials and a clay mixer dating to the early 1900’s. Our process is timeless, and every handcrafted object we create continues to enrich our Detroit heritage.
Visit Pewabic to experience stunning Arts and Crafts era pottery designed by founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton, galleries with displays of art ceramic from around the country, and our staff artisans handcrafting today’s ceramic designs. Enjoy a one of a kind Detroit experience and purchase a beautiful piece of ceramic art to commemorate your trip.
We are open to the public seven days a week with free admission. We accept donations of support.
GUIDED TOURS & HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES
Are you a Detroit enthusiast? Do you want to plan a unique activity for your school field trip, a family member’s birthday party, or community group outing?
Pewabic docent led tours and hands-on workshops are the perfect introduction to our community. On our guided tours, a docent will take you through our storied history beginning with the founding of Pewabic. In addition to our history, go behind the scenes in our fabrication space to see our staff pressing tiles, glazing bisque objects and (un)loading kilns. The docent will also take you for a quick visit to our education studio where we share the methods and tradition of making ceramics.
Would you like a hands-on activity to complement your tour experience? We believe clay is a perfect vehicle for self-expression and an excellent tool for building community. Our hands-on workshops are an engaging activity for team building events, family activities, and youth and adult groups. In our workshops, participants are encouraged to explore their creativity and personalize a clay tile.
Tours and workshops require a group of ten or more. Tours last approximately one hour. Workshops are two hours. We can make special accommodations for visitors with limited mobility. Let us know how we can work with your needs.
Plan your visit to Pewabic during one of our special events. We host family friendly events including our annual Raku Party, exhibitions, special tours, and visiting artist workshops throughout the year.
Each Second Saturday we offer free docent-guided tours of our historic pottery building and demonstrations by staff artisans and often a featured visiting artist. Tours begin at noon and 2 PM.
