The Opportunity
Pewabic is seeking an experienced Fractional Human Resources Professional to provide interim HR leadership and day-to-day human resources support during an organizational transition.
This engagement is ideal for an experienced HR executive, retired HR leader, HR consultant, or fractional HR professional who enjoys helping organizations navigate change while providing practical, hands-on HR support.
The selected professional will partner closely with the CFO and leadership team to maintain HR operations, support recruitment, oversee employee administration, and ensure compliance until a permanent HR leader is hired.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Recruitment
· Partner with hiring managers to fill open positions.
· Coordinate and manage job postings.
· Screen applicants and conduct initial interviews.
· Coordinate hiring manager interviews.
· Conduct reference and employment verifications.
· Prepare offer letters and hiring documentation.
Employee Lifecycle Management
· Coordinate onboarding and orientation.
· Complete I-9 and employment eligibility verification.
· Maintain personnel files and employee documentation.
· Manage employee offboarding and separation processes.
Payroll & HRIS Administration
· Maintain employee records in Paychex.
· Process employee status and payroll changes.
· Monitor PTO balances and accruals.
· Support year-end employee processing.
Benefits Administration
· Administer employee benefit programs, including:
o Navigator Benefits Platform
o HAP
o WEX
o COBRA
o American Funds
o 401(k) administration
· Coordinate annual open enrollment.
Compliance & Risk Management
· Maintain HR compliance documentation.
· Coordinate Workers' Compensation administration.
· Coordinate OSHA compliance activities.
· Coordinate Concentra testing.
· Administer STD/LTD claims.
· Support employment law compliance.
· Maintain accurate employee records.
Strategic HR Support
· Provide weekly status updates to the CFO.
· Identify opportunities to improve HR processes.
· Assist with transition planning for the incoming permanent HR leader.
· Recommend operational improvements that strengthen the HR function.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who brings both strategic perspective and a willingness to be hands-on.
Preferred qualifications include:
· Five or more years of progressive Human Resources experience.
· Experience leading HR during organizational transitions.
· Strong recruiting and talent acquisition background.
· Experience administering employee benefits and payroll.
· Working knowledge of Michigan employment law.
· Experience with Paychex or comparable HRIS platforms.
· Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with leadership.
· Nonprofit experience preferred.
· SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred.
Work Schedule
This is a flexible hybrid engagement requiring both remote work and regular on-site presence at Pewabic's Detroit campus. We anticipate approximately 15–25 hours per week, although the schedule may vary depending on hiring activity and organizational needs.
