After earning a BFA from College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Gretchen Kramp worked for a local ceramic artist, where she met many other clay artists and learned more about the history of tile making in Detroit. Finally, after making some tiles as Christmas presents, she became hooked on the medium. Edging into a medium more commonly associated with 'craft' has given her license to take greater pleasure in the tactility and process inherent in the materials. Squeezing clay between her fingers. This led to becoming a full time self employed tile artist for 20 years, exhibiting in many galleries (including Pewabic Pottery) as well as working the art fair circuit. Kramp has also done public mural work, including 2 installations at the Detroit Zoo and one at Children's Hospital in Detroit.
