Susanne Stephenson | Transfigurement

Susanne Stephenson has been an important contributor to the field of ceramics for six decades. She received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. The recipient of many awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, she was granted an Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from Grand Valley State University in 1992. She has exhibited around the globe since her first solo exhibition at Tamayo Gallery in Fukuoka, Japan in 1963. As a Professor of Ceramics and Art Appreciation for nearly thirty years she mentored and influenced the careers of countless artists.

Stephenson’s work may be found in numerous collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague), The Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse), American Craft Museum (New York City), Victoria and Albert Museum of Art (London), The Detroit Institute of Arts, Crocker Art Museum (CA), Cranbrook Museum of Art (MI), Downey Museum of Art (CA), Mint Museum of Craft and Design (NC), Ariana Musee (Geneva), George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (Toronto), Foshan/ Nanfeng Museum and San Bao Collection (PR China), International Ceramic Center (Denmark), Benaki Museum (Athens),and the American Ceramic Museum (FLICAM) (Fuping, China).
