Detroit Public Library
The extraordinary Pewabic Tile mural that resides in the loggia of the third floor at the Detroit Public Library was designed by Frederick J. Wiley and crafted by Pewabic Co-Founders Mary Chase Stratton and Horace Caulkins.
This impressive design carries across all seven arched ceiling spaces of the loggia and depicts the “Seven Ages of Man," a scene in Shakespeare's "As You Like It” and dates back to 1920. This large-scale design took seven months to complete.
The “Storybook” Fireplace was installed in 1919 for the Children’s Reading Room. Swipe through to view photos of this fireplace taken not long after the tile was installed along with more detailed images of the hand-sculpted, storybook panel tiles.
