This Phoenix Tile, and its companion the Trickster Tile, comes from deep in our archives and was created during our founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton’s lifetime. Inspiration was taken directly from Korean roof tiles depicting both terrifying beasts and serene landscapes that were most likely created in the Baekje Kingdom dating back to 18 BCE.

Once these tiles were unearthed sometime between 1910 and 1945, the tiles traveled across the globe. It was most likely during this time period that Stratton was able to study and recreate the design.
