Explore experimental firing processes in this intermediate/advanced ceramics course focused on alternative firing techniques outside of the standard Cone 6–Cone 10 Pewabic Education offerings. Through lecture, demonstration, and limited participation, students will be introduced to a variety of non-traditional firing methods and surface outcomes.

This course does not cover the making of ceramic work. Students must arrive with work and be able to commit to bringing both bisque-fired and greenware pieces suitable for firing.

A survey will be sent to enrolled students to determine interest in specific firing processes, and the final syllabus will be shaped based on those responses.

This is an adult class for students ages 18 and older.

Possible firing processes may include (but are not limited to or guaranteed):

  • Western Raku
  • Obvara firing
  • Pit firing
  • Sagger firing

Class includes:

  • 3 hours of weekly instruction
  • Participation in alternative firing processes
  • Access to open studio hours outside of class

This course is intended for intermediate to advanced students who are comfortable preparing their own ceramic work for firing and are interested in experimental surface techniques and kiln processes.

Important Information: The class is non-transferable, and no refunds will be issued after the first week of classes begin. Pewabic Education Studio is not responsible for rescheduling classes due to inclement weather, power outages, CDC-related shutdowns, schedule misunderstandings, or personal conflicts. Makeup classes are not guaranteed, and classes will not be prorated for missed sessions. For questions, contact the Onsite Manager at lmccoy@pewabic.org.
