2020 Detroit Home Design Awards
Big thanks to Hour Media's Detroit Design magazine for recognizing two Pewabic installations in their recently announced 2020 Detroit Home Design Awards.
"Pewabic's creations are outstanding and it was great to see that the judges, too, recognized great tile when they saw it,” explains Detroit Design Editor Megan Swoyer. “I was excited that Pewabic won for Interior Use of Tile, but also their creations won in Use of Color (blues, in this case) in a fabulous Birmingham home."
The tile recognition features our 2x6 Smoke tiles in classic subway tile and herringbone patterns, putting a modern twist on a kitchen stove back and backsplash.
A Pewabic fireplace surround and hearth blending blue field tiles, signature iridescent blue trim and our sculpted comedy and tragedy tiles is a focal point in the blue parlor of Kathleen McGovern Studio of Interior Design, garnering accolades in the Color category.
An Ode to Blue
We give a nod to Pantone’s color of the year “Classic Blue” with a collection of Pewabic’s signature blue glazes. From poolside tile to your cottage up north, blues are perfectly Michigan.
If you’re interested in incorporating some of this magic into your own home, contact our Design Studio today at design@pewabic.org.
Pewabic’s Standard Runs give you the opportunity to jump-start a DIY tile project you’ve been putting off, with somewhat less lead time than a custom job.
Our tile studio is currently paused, but hopes to be back in operation April 14, as we comply with Michigan’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order regarding COVID-19. Be sure to check here for updates.

Historic Inspiration for Pewabic's Hex Paperweight

Black Lives Matter.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
Pewabic has operated in Detroit for over a century. We recognize the inequity our Black community faces on a daily basis and we share the grief and horror following the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and far too many others.
The challenges currently facing this nation are severe and will require all of us working together to overcome. But progress will only be made when we recognize that the pain and suffering has not been equally shared. Black Lives Matter. We stand with those calling for an end to racism and injustice. We know that we have much more work to do ourselves, but we will continue our efforts to build an organization that is welcoming to and fully reflective of Detroit's diverse community.
We’ve been mostly quiet this week, listening, but we believe that art can be a powerful vehicle for understanding. In that spirit, we wanted to share some of the work being created by Kyle and Kelly Phelps, two of our favorite artists working in clay.
