In Pewabic Pottery: A History Handcrafted in Detroit, author Cara Catallo illuminates the story behind how Detroit neighbors Horace Caulkins and Mary Chase Perry pooled their talents to found Pewabic Pottery.

With modest beginnings in 1903, Pewabic transformed from a rented stable in Detroit’s Brush Park to its recognizable English Tudor-style building on East Jefferson Avenue, built by William Buck Stratton, who later became Perry’s husband. Today, the iconic enterprise continues Perry’s dedication to handcrafted ceramics and remains known for its iridescent glaze finishes on vessels and architectural tiles in installations throughout Detroit and the country.
